The aim of this project is to set up a central chicken farm that will help single Afghan women and/or widows. This is accomplished by helping the women set up a small chicken farm to sell eggs. The widows receive chickens, all the necessary materials (e.g. a coop and feed) and the necessary training from the central farm.

The widows can then sell the eggs and manure from their chickens through the central farm. Thanks to this job, the women generate extra income, learn to take responsibility and ownership, and gain access to free lessons on hygiene and nutritional values. In this way, the women gain work experience and become financially and socially independent.

Our approach

Selling eggs for income

The central farm keeps its own chickens and helps 25 single women with families to raise chickens. The farm functions as a cooperative, aiming to achieve financial benefits by purchasing and selling collectively. The women receive the necessary materials from the farm, and the eggs and manure are sold through the farm. This enables the farm to become financially independent in the short term. It is also possible to gradually increase the number of women receiving support each year.

The manager/company provides the following preconditions:

  • Purchase and transport of the chickens.
  • Central sales point for the eggs.
  • Purchase of feed and other supplies.
  • A good location and all necessary facilities.
  • Support for the women, including education on keeping chickens.
